Nevermind

If Nevermind's sound is familiar now, it's only because thousands of rock records that followed it were trying very hard to copy its style. It tears out of the speakers like a cannonball, from the punk-turbo-charged riff of "Smells Like Teen Spirit" onward, magnifying and distilling the wounded rage of 15 years of the rock underground into a single impassioned roar. Few albums have occupied the cultural consciousness like this one; of its 12 songs, roughly 10 are now standards. The record's historical weight can make it hard to hear now with fresh ears, but the monumental urgency of Kurt Cobain's screams is still shocking.

In Utero

In Utero is the third and final studio album by the American alternative rock band Nirvana, released on September 21, 1993 through DGC Records. Following the success of the group's breakthrough second album, Nevermind (1991), Nirvana sought to avoid that album's polished production and hired recording engineer Steve Albini to produce the record. The band recorded the album with Albini in two weeks in February 1993, capturing an abrasive and naturalistic sound for the record. While some of the songs were years old, the lyrics largely dealt with frontman Kurt Cobain's reflections on his newfound fame and recent personal troubles, incorporating imagery of sickness and disease.

Kurt Cobain loved to confound his fans' expectations during his brief stint in the spotlight. So when Nirvana gathered in New York City on November 18 1993 he had another trick up his sleeve--an acoustic performance of the raw ferocious grunge songs that propelled the band to stardom. The results were startling and for many viewers a hidden depth to Cobain's songwriting talents were revealed as gentle renditions of NEVERMIND staples such as "On a Plain" and "Come As You Are" were stripped down and performed for a specially invited audience. Among the many highlights is the performance of "Jesus Don't Want Me For a Sunbeam" which was originally by Scottish indie-pop group (and longstanding favorite of Cobain's) the Vaselines; a stunning opening in the form of the BLEACH-era track "About a Girl"; and a selection of songs originally performed by underground rock act the Meat Puppets. This release includes the entire performance and is supplemented by some rehearsal footage for the sessions and a couple of tracks that weren't originally broadcast by MTV.Format: DVD AUDIO Genre: MUSIC DVD/LIVE PERFORMANCES UPC: 602517506305 Manufacturer No: B0010263-09
